Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has been granted permission to operate 41 natural gas turbines in Southaven, Mississippi. The state’s environmental regulator, MDEQ, approved the permit on Tuesday during a meeting scheduled on the day of the 2026 primary elections. The decision allows xAI to significantly increase its power capacity to fuel its high-density “Colossus” datacenters.
The turbines will provide a total of 1.2 gigawatts of power, intended to make the facility self-sufficient and independent of the regional grid. This infrastructure is vital for the upcoming “Macrohardrr” datacenter, which represents a $20 billion investment in the Southaven community. Musk has expressed gratitude to state officials for supporting the project’s “insane execution speed.”
The NAACP and other civil rights groups have expressed “outrage” at the permit’s approval, particularly the timing and location of the hearing. By holding the meeting 200 miles away on a voting day, the state allegedly created a “civic duty conundrum” for local residents. Critics argue that xAI has a history of flouting environmental laws, having previously operated unpermitted turbines in both Memphis and Southaven.
Health concerns dominate the local discourse, as the turbines emit hazardous pollutants like formaldehyde and nitrogen oxide. Advocacy groups claim that the facility’s smog-forming emissions will be the highest in the 11-county Memphis metropolitan area. An independent study suggests that the resulting air pollution could lead to $30-$44 million in annual health-related costs for local residents.
While state leaders celebrate the project as the largest economic development in Mississippi’s history, the community remains divided. The $20 billion facility is expected to bring hundreds of permanent jobs and significant tax revenue to the region. However, the NAACP’s planned lawsuit under the Clean Air Act ensures that the environmental impact of Musk’s AI empire will be scrutinized in court.
