Iran Delegation Departs Amid Trump Threat; Economic Negotiations Persist

Date:

Tensions flared briefly in Switzerland during ongoing talks between Iran and the United States when Iran’s delegation temporarily exited the negotiation venue. This occurred after US President Donald Trump issued new threats concerning Tehran’s support for Hezbollah, which raised alarms about the potential impact on the discussions focused on reducing regional tensions.

The Iranian delegation’s departure followed a meeting with Qatari mediators. The move was reportedly in response to Trump’s warning of possible military action if Iran did not curb its backing of Hezbollah. However, according to a diplomat with knowledge of the talks, Iran did not withdraw from the negotiations and continued to participate in the dialogue.

Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, reacted strongly to the US President’s comments, stating that Iran’s military forces were prepared to respond if threatened. The initial round of discussions centered on implementing a recently agreed-upon US-Iran memorandum of understanding and the situation in Lebanon. Notably, Iran’s nuclear program was not part of this session’s agenda.

US Vice President JD Vance hailed the negotiations as a “historic meeting,” expressing optimism for a long-lasting improvement in regional relations. The talks are taking place amid heightened tensions related to Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran emphasizing that any lasting progress toward a final agreement requires resolving hostilities in Lebanon.

Despite differences, negotiators from both countries remain committed to continuing the discussions, aiming to secure a broader agreement within the next 60 days. The determination to move forward, despite the contentious issues, signals a mutual interest in stabilizing a region fraught with longstanding conflicts.
