Russia has decided to recall its ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrey Kelin, after he served in the position for seven years. This move occurs as the relationship between Moscow and London continues to worsen due to the UK’s support for Ukraine. The Russian embassy announced that Kelin’s diplomatic assignment concluded on July 21, and they have not yet announced a successor. Consequently, Vasily A. Tsyganov, the embassy’s chargé d’affaires, is now the highest-ranking Russian diplomat in the UK.
The withdrawal of Ambassador Kelin takes place against a backdrop of escalating tensions related to Britain’s military assistance to Ukraine. Recently, Russia issued a warning to Britain about “consequences” following reports that British-manufactured attack drones were being provided to Ukraine, potentially to be used against targets within Russian territory. This development has added strain to the already frayed relations between the two nations.
The Kremlin has accused London of adopting a confrontational stance, whereas the UK government has reiterated its stance of supporting Ukraine in defending itself against Russia’s invasion. This ongoing conflict of positions has contributed to the growing diplomatic rift between Moscow and London.
The removal of Kelin has led to speculation about Russia’s future diplomatic engagement with the UK. Despite the change, the Russian embassy has stated that this should not be seen as an indication of any intention to formally reduce the level of diplomatic relations with Britain. The embassy’s clarification suggests that, for the time being, Moscow intends to maintain its current level of diplomatic presence in the UK, despite the absence of a new ambassador.
