NATO’s 5% Defense Spending Boosts Economic and Business Prospects, Says Trump

Date:

In a significant shift for international defense strategy, NATO allies have committed to a substantial increase in defense and security spending, aiming to allocate 5% of their GDP by 2035. This decision, reached at the 2025 NATO Summit in The Hague, marks a notable escalation from the previous benchmark of 2% and is part of a broader initiative to bolster military capabilities and collective security.

US President Donald Trump, speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, praised the commitment as a pivotal advancement for the alliance. Under the new agreement, NATO members will channel at least 3.5% of their GDP towards core defense needs, with an additional 1.5% earmarked for defense-related investments and security measures.

Concurrently, Trump called for the resolution of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing the humanitarian toll the war continues to inflict. He assured that the United States remains dedicated to pursuing diplomatic solutions to bring about an end to the hostilities.

NATO’s announcement highlights the progress made by European allies and Canada, which have already increased their combined core defense expenditure by nearly 20% in real terms in 2025 compared to the previous year. This increase is a step towards meeting the ambitious 5% GDP target, underscoring the alliance’s commitment to enhancing its defense posture.

The decision to increase defense spending reflects NATO’s strategic efforts to address evolving global threats and ensure the security of its member nations. As the alliance looks towards 2035, this renewed focus on defense investment is expected to fortify its military strength and preparedness for future challenges.
