Middle East Tensions Push Brent Crude to Five-Month High Amid Supply Fears

Date:

Brent crude prices surged to their highest level in over five months as escalating tensions in the Middle East sparked fears of potential disruptions to oil supplies. The increase comes in the wake of intensified conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen-based Houthi forces, which has raised alarms about the security of energy shipments from the region.

Brent crude futures rose by 0.7%, reaching $113.96 per barrel after hitting a peak of $114.72, marking the highest point since May 4. Similarly, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude saw a 1.1% increase, reaching $100.57 per barrel. While Brent was set to achieve a third straight weekly gain of nearly 4%, WTI appeared likely to post a weekly decrease of about 0.8%.

The situation escalated as reports emerged of Saudi Aramco evacuating its Dhahran headquarters due to the conflict’s intensification. Analysts caution that any further attacks could significantly disrupt oil shipments, worsening the current supply shortages. Uncertainty surrounding shipping routes, fluctuating oil flows, and increased freight costs continue to exert pressure on the global energy market.

The conflict has also heightened concerns over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical shipping corridor linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Prolonged disturbances in this area could delay energy deliveries and sustain elevated oil prices.

Compounding these supply concerns, Libya is facing production challenges due to the shutdown of a pipeline valve connecting the Hamada and Tahara oilfields to Zawiya port, which has reduced output at these fields.

Amid these tensions, a Malta-flagged tanker carrying 40,000 metric tons of Russian diesel is en route to New York, following Russia’s decision to resume diesel exports to global markets, including the United States, aiming to alleviate fuel-price pressures.

As the situation unfolds, the oil markets are expected to remain highly sensitive to developments in the Middle East, the extent of any shipping disruptions, and the time needed to restore affected energy operations.
