EU Targets Russia’s Military-Industrial Sector with Expanded Sanctions

Date:

The European Union has significantly expanded its sanctions against Russia, now targeting nearly 1,600 individuals and entities connected to the country’s military-industrial sector. This move is part of the EU’s ongoing effort to diminish Russia’s ability to manufacture weapons and sustain its military operations in Ukraine.

The newly approved sanctions package adds 826 Russian companies and 743 executives to the list, focusing on those involved in the production and supply of missile, drone, and military aircraft components. Key supply chains affected include producers and suppliers of explosives, ammunition, semiconductors, and computer equipment.

Additionally, the EU has sanctioned 74 Russian State Duma lawmakers and three members of Russia’s Central Election Commission. These measures are in response to their roles in parliamentary elections conducted in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories.

In a related action, sanctions have also been imposed on three individuals and four entities in North Korea. These sanctions target the country’s nuclear and missile programs and its increasing military and economic collaboration with Moscow.

Those under sanctions are subject to asset freezes, and EU citizens and companies are barred from providing them with funds or economic resources. Travel bans across the 27 EU member states are also in place for sanctioned individuals.

With these latest measures, the total number of individuals and entities sanctioned by the EU due to Russia’s war against Ukraine has reached nearly 4,600. This expansion underscores the EU’s continued efforts to weaken Moscow’s military and financial capacities amid the ongoing conflict.
