Heathrow Airport has been overtaken as Europe’s busiest airport, with Istanbul Airport welcoming more passengers in July. Heathrow saw 7.86 million passengers, whereas Istanbul Airport handled a slightly higher number, totaling 8.15 million. This shift marks a significant milestone, as Istanbul Airport’s operations continue to expand since its opening in 2018.
The decline in passenger numbers at Heathrow, which fell by 1.5% compared to July of the previous year, has been linked to disruptions associated with ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts. In contrast, Istanbul Airport experienced a 2.3% increase in traffic during the same period. The contrasting trends at these two major airports have sparked renewed discussions regarding the expansion plans for Heathrow.
Pressure is mounting on the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s proposed third runway, a development that could potentially boost the airport’s annual capacity to about 150 million passengers. Currently, Heathrow operates with two runways that are nearly at full capacity. The airport’s management argues that expanding its facilities is crucial for enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism sectors.
In comparison, Istanbul Airport benefits from a larger site, operating around the clock with three existing runways and a fourth slated to open by the end of 2026. This infrastructure allows Istanbul to accommodate a higher volume of passengers and positions it as a formidable competitor in European air travel.
While Heathrow faces challenges, other UK airports are witnessing record numbers. Both London Stansted and Manchester airports reported their busiest July on record, with Stansted handling 3.1 million passengers and Manchester catering to 3.4 million. These figures highlight the dynamic nature of air travel across the region, with varying trends observed at different airports.
