In a strategic shift, Brussels Airlines is revamping its fare structure for short and medium-haul routes, eliminating complimentary overhead cabin baggage for its most economical ticket option. The current Economy Light fare, which allows travelers to carry both a personal item and a standard cabin bag, will be replaced by the new Economy Basic fare. This entry-level fare will only permit passengers to bring a small personal item that fits under the seat, such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack.
Passengers wishing to travel with a larger cabin suitcase will have to opt for a higher fare category or incur an additional fee. This new fare policy is set to be trialed starting April 28, with flights departing from May 19 on select routes. If the trial proves successful, Brussels Airlines plans to extend the policy across its entire European network.
This initiative is part of a wider strategy by the Lufthansa Group, which encompasses Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Air Dolomiti. The group argues that the change offers greater flexibility, allowing passengers who travel light to benefit from lower fares. However, frequent flyers and business travelers who regularly rely on cabin luggage might find that overall costs remain unchanged once baggage fees are factored in.
The new fare structure is expected to particularly affect business travelers, expatriates, and families who prefer cabin baggage to avoid checked luggage fees and airport delays. Travelers are encouraged to thoroughly review fare conditions before booking and to assess the total travel cost, including any additional baggage fees, rather than focusing solely on the advertised ticket price.
While the Economy Basic fare could provide savings for those traveling with only a personal item, it may not represent the lowest overall travel cost for many others. As the airline implements this change, passengers must weigh the advertised savings against potential additional costs to determine the best option for their travel needs.
