A court in New Mexico has mandated that Meta contribute $567 million to a dedicated fund aimed at mitigating mental health issues allegedly inflicted on children by its social media platforms. This decision follows a jury’s verdict in March, which concluded that Meta played a role in harming children’s mental well-being and did not take sufficient steps to combat child sexual exploitation on its networks. The recent court order brings Meta’s total financial responsibility in this case to $942 million.
Out of the $567 million stipulated in the latest court decision, $420 million is earmarked for mental health treatment services for youth in New Mexico. The remainder will be allocated to prevention and awareness initiatives, screening services, and other related measures over the forthcoming five years. Additionally, the court has instructed Meta to enhance its child-safety protocols on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. This includes refining age-assurance processes, offering clearer guidance on safety and privacy features, and developing strategies to identify users who might be under the age of 13.
Meta is also required to collaborate with educational institutions or child-safety organizations to establish a system for reporting accounts believed to belong to children under 13. The company must remove any personal information gathered from users below this age threshold and submit biannual progress reports detailing its adherence to the court’s mandates. Despite these requirements, the court refrained from imposing a universal age verification system exclusively for New Mexico, voicing concerns about fairness and existing federal privacy protections for minors.
Meta has expressed its intention to appeal the ruling, arguing that it has made efforts to safeguard users and address issues related to harmful content and online safety. This legal battle adds to the mounting pressure on Meta, as it faces similar lawsuits in other states across the United States, all centered on the potential adverse impacts of its platforms on young users.
