Microsoft’s Edge Strategies Spark Economic Concerns Amid Business Community

Microsoft is under renewed investigation following allegations of employing aggressive strategies to push Windows users towards its Edge browser, potentially restricting the use of other competing browsers. The tech giant is accused of creating obstacles for users who wish to download, set as default, and maintain the use of alternative browsers on Windows devices. This comes in light of findings from Mozilla Research’s latest report, “Over the Edge 2.0,” which scrutinizes Microsoft’s continued design practices.

The report claims that Microsoft leverages its platforms, such as Windows, Bing, and Copilot, to promote Edge in ways that could discourage users from exploring rival browsers. Specific concerns raised include promotional content aimed at persuading Chrome users to switch to Edge, instances where links open in Edge regardless of a user’s default browser settings, and instances where browser preferences are not preserved after system upgrades.

The Browser Choice Alliance, comprising companies like Opera, Vivaldi, and Google Chrome, has voiced concern over these practices, arguing that they impact global browser competition. The group has urged Microsoft to honor user preferences, advocating for a more equitable browsing experience. Despite these concerns, Google Chrome maintains a dominant position in the browser market, commanding nearly 70% of the market share. Apple’s Safari follows in second place, while Microsoft Edge holds a distant third with just over 5%.

In regions such as the European Economic Area, browser choice is reportedly better protected due to regulatory measures under the Digital Markets Act, which have compelled Microsoft to modify some of its criticized practices. However, the report notes that many of these tactics persist in other significant markets, including the United States, India, and the United Kingdom. Researchers and industry groups are now calling for Microsoft to facilitate easier browser switching and to cease practices they consider detrimental to competition and user choice.
