Hungary’s Economic Concerns: FIDESZ MEPs Demand EU Commission’s Response

Date:

In a recent session of the European Parliament, the FIDESZ–KDNP delegation from Hungary voiced concerns over the European Commission’s silence regarding recent political and constitutional changes in Hungary. The delegation, which consists of members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László, highlighted issues they believe are eroding democratic structures in the country.

During a joint assembly of the Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, these Hungarian lawmakers urged the European Commission to articulate its stance on a series of developments, including amendments to the constitution, limitations on political competition, alterations impacting parliamentary mandates, and challenges to the independence of state institutions. They emphasized that these changes could potentially conflict with European democratic norms.

The FIDESZ–KDNP representatives recalled past instances when the Commission expressed concerns over the rule of law in Hungary and withheld European Union funds as a result. They argued that, despite these previous actions, the Commission has not yet addressed the most recent constitutional changes in the country. The lawmakers questioned whether these changes align with the democratic standards expected within the European Union.

Arguing for consistent application of democratic principles across all EU member states, the Hungarian delegation stressed the importance of uniformity in addressing issues of democracy and rule of law. Despite the pointed questions and concerns raised by the delegation, Commission representatives did not offer detailed replies during the hearing, leaving some questions unanswered.
