Independent TDs Noel Grealish and Seán Canney have voiced their support for former minister Heather Humphreys should she decide to enter the presidential race. Both politicians praised her experience, leadership skills, and ability to unite people across the country.
Grealish said Humphreys’ long record in government and deep knowledge of the Constitution would make her an excellent head of state. He highlighted her reputation among colleagues from all political parties and her ability to represent Ireland with distinction at home and abroad.
Canney echoed this view, describing Humphreys as a strong candidate with an understanding of rural Ireland and a proven record in handling crises and constitutional issues. He said she would serve as a unifying figure, bringing people together if elected.
Their endorsements follow similar support from other independents, including Michael Healy-Rae, who described Humphreys as an “excellent candidate.” While Humphreys retired from politics last year, she is now believed to be reconsidering her options after the withdrawal of Mairead McGuinness from the race. Fine Gael is expected to discuss its next steps in the coming days.
