The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an opposition group aiming to overthrow the Iranian regime and linked with the People’s Mujahideen Of Iran (PMOI), has sharply criticized Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). The DFA recently stated it has no links to the NCRI or PMOI due to “concerns about some aspects of its organisation and activities,” without detailing those concerns.
In response, the NCRI condemned the DFA’s “vague concerns,” suggesting they stem from a broader policy of “engaging with and appeasing the Iranian regime.” Hossein Abedini, spokesman for the NCRI, highlighted that Tehran’s ruling mullahs consider any interaction with the NCRI or PMOI by foreign entities an “absolute red line.” He asserted that the Iranian regime views the NCRI’s resistance as an “existential threat,” citing the execution of over 100,000 of its members and supporters since 1979, including the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners, mostly from the PMOI.
Abedini concluded by urging the international community to abandon the “failed policy of appeasing the mullahs in Tehran” and instead “unequivocally side with the Iranian people and their democratic opposition in their quest for a free, democratic republic.”
