Germany, France, and Spain have been particularly affected, collectively accounting for more than 25,000 of these estimated fatalities. In Germany, around 14,000 deaths have been linked to heat between April and early August, marking the deadliest summer on record for the country. Spain has similarly experienced nearly 5,000 heat-related deaths since May, setting a new national record.
France has reported approximately 7,300 excess deaths during the period from late May through July, though this preliminary figure does not yet account for August. Meanwhile, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland are among other nations that have seen significant rises in mortality during the bouts of extreme heat. The alarming death toll underscores the severe public health risks posed by heatwaves, which have become more frequent and intense due to climate change.
The oppressive heat saw temperatures soaring above 40°C across vast areas of western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records. Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and severity of these extreme heat events to the ongoing impacts of climate change. As the situation unfolds, experts anticipate a rise in the overall European death toll once delayed mortality data is analyzed and August figures are included.
Identifying heat-related deaths can be challenging, as extreme temperatures often exacerbate existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health conditions, rather than being directly recorded as the cause of death.
