Ireland Withdraws from Eurovision 2027, Cites Economic Concerns Over Israel’s Role.

Date:

Amid ongoing tensions and humanitarian concerns in Gaza, the Eurovision Song Contest is facing a growing wave of non-participation. Ireland has confirmed that it will not take part in or broadcast the 2027 event due to the continuing conflict in the region. This decision aligns with the Irish public broadcaster RTÉ’s stance on boycotting the contest while civilian lives are at risk and access for international journalists remains restricted.

Ireland’s absence from the 2027 competition follows a similar boycott in 2026, alongside the Netherlands, Spain, Iceland, and Slovenia. These nations objected to the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) decision to include Israel in the contest. The EBU, which organizes Eurovision, has expressed respect for Ireland’s decision and remains hopeful that RTÉ will rejoin future competitions.

The Netherlands has also indicated it will not participate in the 2027 Eurovision, though discussions are underway about the possibility of another broadcaster representing the country. Meanwhile, Spain, Iceland, and Slovenia have yet to publicly announce their plans regarding the upcoming contest.

The 2027 Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria, in May. This prestigious event, known for its celebration of music and cultural diversity, is facing challenges as geopolitical issues impact participation and raise questions about the inclusivity and ethics of the competition.
