Elon Musk Says Tesla Needs Him to Lead Robot Development Safely

Date:

Elon Musk used Tesla’s earnings call to argue that the company needs his continued leadership to develop robotics technology safely, linking the issue to his trillion-dollar compensation package. The argument came ahead of the November 6 shareholder vote on the controversial plan.
Tesla’s quarterly earnings discussion had addressed the company’s progress in AI applications, autonomous vehicles, and the Optimus humanoid robot before Musk’s intervention. His decision to emphasize safe robot development demonstrated an attempt to connect compensation directly to responsible technological advancement.
Musk articulated his position that meaningful voting control is essential for maintaining strategic influence over Tesla while accepting appropriate shareholder oversight. He presented the issue as crucial for continuing to lead ambitious robotics and AI projects without facing removal based on external recommendations.
The CEO directed sharp criticism toward ISS and Glass Lewis, accusing these proxy advisory firms of lacking understanding about Tesla’s technological objectives. Musk specifically expressed discomfort with the possibility of being removed while building what he termed a “robot army,” emphasizing the importance of stable leadership for such initiatives.
CFO Vaibhav Taneja concluded the call by emphasizing the performance-based structure of Musk’s pay package. The CFO explained that the board designed the compensation to ensure Musk receives nothing unless shareholders see substantial returns, making multiple appeals for investor approval before ending the discussion.
