Ireland’s Taoiseach Warns of Global Shame from Gaza’s Suffering at UN Assembly

Date:

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin expressed profound concern over the situation in Gaza, cautioning that the full extent of the suffering, once fully uncovered, could “shame the world.” Martin’s remarks highlighted a broader critique of the international community’s handling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which he argued has consistently failed to bring about meaningful change for Palestine.

Martin criticized efforts that have complicated the pursuit of a two-state solution, pointing specifically to violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank who, he claimed, operate with almost complete impunity. He described the ongoing displacement and destruction faced by Palestinian communities as akin to ethnic cleansing. Despite these challenges, Martin reiterated Ireland’s commitment to a two-state solution, emphasizing the need for both Palestinian and Israeli states to coexist peacefully and securely.

In his address, Martin also called for renewed diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran, underscoring the necessity for Iran to refrain from acquiring nuclear weapons and to cease activities that destabilize the region. He urged the international community to bolster support for global institutions, such as the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, in order to maintain a steadfast commitment to peace, human rights, and development.

The ongoing war in Ukraine was another focal point of Martin’s speech. He criticized Russia’s continued aggression, which he noted had exacerbated global food and energy costs. Martin stressed that Russia holds the power to cease its attacks and bring an end to the conflict.

Additionally, Ireland is pursuing a seat on the UN Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term, signaling its intent to play a more active role in global human rights advocacy.
