Haaland’s Double Chance Goes Begging in City Draw

Erling Haaland had two excellent opportunities to secure victory for Manchester City but could only convert one in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion. The result extends the champions’ winless run to three Premier League matches and leaves them five points behind Arsenal.
The Norwegian’s first opportunity came from the penalty spot four minutes before halftime, and he made no mistake, converting after Diego Gomez fouled Jeremy Doku in the Brighton box. VAR confirmed the decision, and Haaland scored his 150th goal for Manchester City. The strike also ended his three-match goal drought and took him to 20 Premier League goals for the season.
City nearly doubled their lead early in the second half when Bernardo Silva pounced on a Brighton defensive error, but his shot struck the post. The match’s intensity increased when a confrontation erupted between City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper, with both players receiving yellow cards.
Brighton equalized in the 60th minute through Kaoru Mitoma, who produced a finish of excellent quality. The Japanese international received a pass from the flank, composed himself at the edge of the penalty area, and curled a low shot into the far corner with precision.
The visitors took control after scoring, dictating the tempo and creating several opportunities to claim victory. Mitoma was instrumental in Brighton’s best chance, finding Gomez inside the penalty area, but the midfielder’s shot was saved by Donnarumma. Mitoma’s rebound attempt from a tight angle struck the post. Haaland’s second opportunity came in stoppage time when he found himself one-on-one with Verbruggen, but the Brighton goalkeeper produced an outstanding save to deny the striker and ensure the points were shared.
