Row over Reagan ad escalates: Trump ends Canada talks

Date:

A row over an ad featuring Ronald Reagan has escalated dramatically, with president Trump ending all trade negotiations with Canada.
The ad, from Ontario, used a 1987 clip of Reagan saying tariffs “hurt every American worker.” Trump blasted the ad as “fake” and “fraudulent” on truth social.
He accused Canada of “egregious behavior” and interference. The move comes after the US hiked tariffs on Canadian goods to 35%, a move PM Mark Carney called “disappointing.”
The ad is also facing legal threats from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They claim the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the 1987 speech and was used without permission.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, puts a vital economic partnership, with c$3.6 billion in daily trade, at risk.
