Google’s ‘Ultrapowerful’ 1.2T Model Wins $1B Apple Contract

Date:

Google’s “ultrapowerful” 1.2 trillion parameter Gemini AI has been tapped by Apple to power its new Siri, a deal worth $1 billion annually to Google. This “behind-the-scenes” integration follows an extensive “bake-off” where Google’s tech outshined rivals from OpenAI and Anthropic.
This is a “temporary fix” for Apple, which is battling to overcome its AI lag with the “Glenwood” project. The new “Linwood” Siri, set for a spring release, will be a hybrid, using Google’s AI for complex “planner” and “summariser” functions.
The capability jump is massive, from Apple’s 150-billion parameter models to Google’s 1.2T model. This move, overseen by Craig Federighi and Mike Rockwell, is Apple’s reluctant but necessary step to stay in the game.
This deal is a huge validation of Google’s AI, positioning it as an “AI supplier” even to its main competitor. Meanwhile, Apple is pushing its own teams to develop a 1T+ model replacement.
Privacy is a non-negotiable. The 1.2T Gemini model will be hosted on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers. This “walled-off” architecture guarantees Google gets its money but zero access to Apple’s user data.
