“US Signals Tentative Return to G20 After Dispute Over South Africa Policies”

Date:

The United States is now exploring ways to participate in the G20 summit in Johannesburg, according to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The reversal follows weeks of tension sparked by Washington’s earlier plan to boycott the gathering. Whether President Trump will personally attend remains undecided.
Trump had alleged that South Africa discriminates against white Afrikaners and white farmers. South Africa strongly denied the accusations, describing them as misleading and damaging. Despite the claims, the host nation pressed ahead with its agenda for the historic summit.
Ramaphosa said Washington’s late notice created logistical challenges but welcomed the shift as a positive sign. He emphasized that engagement, not absence, strengthens global dialogue. The president viewed the US outreach as a step toward restoring constructive relations.
The diplomatic row intensified when reports emerged of a US note insisting that no final G20 statement could be issued without American approval. South Africa condemned the message, saying it amounted to pressure from outside the room. Officials argued that true consensus cannot be built on absentee demands.
South Africa’s G20 priorities include debt relief and greener development paths for emerging economies. Ramaphosa insisted that broad participation is essential to ensuring global decisions reflect the needs of the world’s most vulnerable populations.
