Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov has delivered a one-two punch in response to US pressure, defending the “beneficial” oil trade with India and simultaneously announcing a major defense expansion, including the Su-57 fighter jet.
The move follows Donald Trump’s claim that PM Modi “assured” him India would stop buying Russian oil, and comes as the US imposes punitive tariffs on India for that trade.
Alipov dismissed the oil speculation, stating the supplies are “very beneficial for the Indian economy.” This supports India’s MEA, which cited “consumer interests” in its own rebuttal to Trump.
Alipov then pivoted to defense, the 60-year “backbone” of the relationship. He offered a “full technology-sharing” deal for the Su-57 fighter, drones, and anti-drone systems, building on successes like the BrahMos missile.
This dual strategy reinforces Russia as a comprehensive partner, offering both economic benefits and unique, “battle-tested” military technology.
