Amid a backdrop of escalating violence, a US and Israeli-backed organization operating aid sites in the Gaza Strip, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), announced the temporary closure of its facilities on Wednesday. This drastic step was prompted by a string of deadly incidents occurring near its distribution centers, leaving an already vulnerable population in even greater peril. The Israeli army further complicated matters by declaring roads to distribution centers “combat zones,” effectively hindering humanitarian efforts.
The closure comes just a day after 27 people were tragically killed in southern Gaza when Israeli troops opened fire near a GHF aid site. While the military is investigating the incident, the repeated targeting of civilians seeking essential supplies has drawn widespread international condemnation. These events underscore the extreme dangers faced by Gazans desperately trying to access food and other necessities.
UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher powerfully articulated the world’s dismay, describing “horrifying scenes of Palestinians being shot, wounded or killed in Gaza while simply trying to eat.” He asserted that these tragic outcomes are the result of “deliberate choices that have systematically deprived two million people of the essentials they need to survive.” Fletcher’s statement highlights the dire consequences of restricted aid access and ongoing hostilities.
Fletcher joined UN chief Antonio Guterres in calling for immediate, independent investigations into these incidents, emphasizing that perpetrators must be held accountable. He reiterated the UN’s capability and readiness to deliver aid, demanding the opening of all crossings, a lifting of aid restrictions, and the implementation of a ceasefire to address the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
