Jury Slams Google: $314.6 Million Payout for Hidden Data Transfers

Date:

Google faces a hefty penalty after a California jury ruled it must compensate Android smartphone users $314.6 million. The tech behemoth was found to have engaged in unauthorized data transfers from devices while they were in an idle state, a practice that unjustly burdened users for the company’s financial gain. This ruling underscores growing concerns about corporate data collection.
The class action, filed in state court in 2019, encompassed approximately 14 million California residents. The core accusation was that Google surreptitiously gathered information from dormant Android devices for its own commercial ends, including personalized advertising, effectively using up users’ mobile data allowances without their explicit consent.
Despite the verdict, Google maintains its innocence and plans to appeal. Spokesperson Jose Castaneda argued that the jury’s decision misinterprets the vital role these data services play in ensuring the “security, performance, and reliability of Android devices.” The company’s appeal will likely focus on demonstrating the necessity and benign nature of its data handling.
Lead attorney for the plaintiffs, Glen Summers, expressed strong satisfaction with the outcome, stating it “forcefully vindicates the merits of this case and reflects the seriousness of Google’s misconduct.” This significant legal challenge highlights the ongoing tension between technological innovation and individual privacy rights. A parallel federal lawsuit, covering users in 49 other states, is slated for trial in April 2026.
