A storm of Democratic outrage has erupted over the passage of Donald Trump’s budget bill, which critics decry as a brazen transfer of wealth to the nation’s richest at the expense of its most vulnerable. The bill’s narrow victory in the House has galvanized Democrats, who are already sharpening their attack lines for the upcoming midterm elections.
The legislation includes permanent tax breaks for billionaires, a move that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lambasted as an egregious contradiction given the simultaneous cuts to social benefits. She specifically cited the expiration of tax breaks for low-wage tipped employees and the reduction of Medicaid expansion and ACA subsidies, which will strip essential healthcare from countless individuals.
Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin pulled no punches, stating, “Today, Donald Trump and the Republican party sent a message to America: if you are not a billionaire, we don’t give a damn about you.” He warned of severe consequences, including job losses, medical care deprivation, and even fatalities, directly attributable to the bill’s provisions.
The bill’s expansion of immigration enforcement, particularly the massive increase in funding for ICE, has also drawn sharp criticism. Ocasio-Cortez expressed alarm, noting that this “explosion” of ICE funding will make the agency “bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, [the] DEA and others combined,” suggesting a future of unprecedented enforcement actions.
