US President Donald Trump has reached out to leaders in Thailand and Cambodia after reports of new clashes along their contested border. The calls came as the peace agreement Trump helped facilitate in late October faces growing challenges.
The White House said Friday that Trump’s conversations focused on preventing further escalation. The ceasefire signed on October 26 had been highlighted by Trump during his Asia tour as a diplomatic milestone.
Tensions resurfaced when Thailand suspended the agreement following a landmine explosion that injured its forces. Subsequent accusations of fresh gunfire on both sides reignited fears of a broader conflict, especially after Cambodia confirmed a civilian had been killed.
Malaysia has continued its role as a critical mediator in the dispute, and Trump engaged Kuala Lumpur in renewed peace efforts. Malaysia previously helped shepherd both nations toward the truce at a ceremony held in its capital.
The conflict between the two neighbors has deep historical roots, but the most recent warfare broke out over alleged landmine placements along the border. The summer’s five-day clash left dozens dead and hundreds of thousands displaced, showing how quickly tensions can spiral.
