Keir Starmer has attempted to quell talk of a leadership challenge by asserting that Andy Burnham is excelling in his role as mayor. He encouraged party unity at a time of heightened political speculation.
Burnham, however, sparked curiosity after repeatedly declining to commit to ruling out a future challenge to Starmer. His comments followed interviews promoting Manchester’s new investment plan.
During his journey to the G20 summit, Starmer recounted how he communicated with Burnham during the synagogue attack crisis. He said the mayor played a crucial role in coordinating local responses.
The prime minister also criticised leaks suggesting that Wes Streeting is planning a leadership move, calling such rumours counterproductive. He emphasised that the government must focus on economic issues affecting families.
Burnham continued to say he has “no leadership challenge” but refused to predict what might unfold in the future. He also hinted that any parliamentary bid would likely be based in the north-west.
