French President Emmanuel Macron is intensifying his efforts to persuade Australia to recognize Palestinian statehood, framing it as a crucial step towards a new Middle East peace pact. This diplomatic push is part of a broader French strategy to galvanize Western support for a two-state solution ahead of a significant UN-backed summit in New York later this month. Macron recently declared that recognizing Palestine is not just a moral imperative but also a political necessity, urging stronger international action.
The upcoming summit, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia from June 17 to 20, is generating considerable buzz, with many anticipating that France might use the occasion to formally recognize Palestine. This would be a significant development, especially given that only 147 of the 193 UN member states currently do. Australia’s traditional stance has been to recognize Palestine only at the end of peace negotiations, but recent statements from Foreign Minister Penny Wong indicate a more flexible approach, viewing early recognition as a potential driver of momentum.
The French foreign ministry has confirmed it is collaborating with international partners, including Australia, on the summit’s four main objectives: recognizing Palestine, normalizing regional ties, reforming the Palestinian Authority, and disarming Hamas. A French spokesperson emphasized the desire for this recognition to be part of a broader political dynamic, aiming for both Palestinian state establishment and Israel’s regional integration. They specifically noted Australia’s strong commitment to the issue.
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s recent condemnation of Israel’s aid blockade in Gaza as an “outrage” further signals a potential shift in the nation’s Middle East policy. This stronger language aligns with international calls for increased pressure on Israel regarding the humanitarian crisis. However, the Australian opposition remains steadfast, insisting that Palestinian statehood can only be recognized once Hamas relinquishes control of Gaza and releases all hostages, warning against “rewarding terrorism.”
