The Burnout Domino Effect: How Parental Stress Topples a Child’s Stability

Date:

Parental stress is like the first domino in a chain reaction that can ultimately topple a child’s academic and emotional stability. A clinical psychologist explains this “domino effect” and provides strategies for parents to stop the chain reaction before it leads to child burnout.
The first domino to fall is the parent’s well-being. Clinical psychologist Meghna Kanwat notes, “Parenting stress and parental burnout” are significant issues. When a parent is overwhelmed, their capacity for patience and emotional regulation decreases.
This directly knocks over the next domino: parenting style. An exhausted parent is more likely to engage in “harsh discipline” or become emotionally distant, as Kanwat points out. The home environment becomes tense and unpredictable.
The third domino is the child’s emotional state. Feeling the tension at home and lacking a calm, responsive caregiver, the child’s own stress and anxiety levels rise. They lose their primary source of emotional support and stability.
The final domino to fall is the child’s performance and well-being, resulting in “academic and learning burnout.” They are now dealing with both school pressure and a stressful home life. To prevent this, parents must stabilize that first domino—their own stress. By practicing self-care and seeking support, they can remain a source of stability, breaking the chain reaction and protecting their child.
