The Unseen Winner: How Perplexity AI Helped Shape a Landmark Ruling

Date:

While much of the focus has been on ChatGPT, another, more specialized AI company, Perplexity AI, played a crucial role in shaping the outcome of the Google antitrust case. By demonstrating a new model for AI-driven search, Perplexity helped convince a federal judge that the competitive landscape was fundamentally changing, thus saving Google from a breakup.
Perplexity AI, which focuses on providing direct, sourced answers to user queries, represents a clear evolution from traditional search. Its model is a prime example of the “Generative AI technologies” that Judge Amit Mehta said “behave more like search engines” and pose a “long-term threat to the search industry.”
The mere existence and rapid growth of services like Perplexity gave credence to Google’s argument that it faces new and significant competitive threats. This allowed the judge to conclude that the market was not static and that a drastic remedy like a divestiture was unnecessary because innovation was already providing a check on Google’s power.
In a twist, Perplexity now stands to benefit from the ruling it indirectly influenced. The mandate for Google to share search data could provide Perplexity with the resources needed to accelerate its challenge to the very company it helped save from being dismantled.
